I get the joke is Gladys has no "responsible direction" and Brutus walked into a closet thinking it was the front door but why were they standing in front of the closet in the first place? Also, why is Mother Gargle there?

Those are a lot of unused clothes hangers.

The number of trick-or-treaters that we receive have dropped every year. The first two years we ran out of candy, came close the third year and since then have had plenty left over. I'm not sure what the reason is.

If you really wanted to plan out a route to maximize your candy collecting then that's a years-long process. You just can't hop into it. It takes years of surveilling your neighbors.
