TIred Tuesdays

November 6, 1967
I'm assuming that Brutus got the weather wrong and it was supposed to sunny and a nice day, but instead it's raining and miserable. They all at least have umbrellas and dressed appropriately? Maybe it's just a "don't we all hate the weatherman?" comic strip?

I'm tired before school every morning. It's something that began in middle school and has just continued for the last 30 or so years. I'm not a morning person.

I love the two info dump panels

August 21, 1988

Yup. We could see this coming from about three panels away. Brutus was going to be hit by something. It was just a question of where and by what.

I'm not positive but I think this is the first Sunday strip without Wilberforce's curls. Wilberforce was last seen in the May 8, 1988 Sunday strip and he had his curls. I wonder if his normal haircut debuted in a Sunday strip or daily strip.

I'd take a sundial for my yard. I want my grandma's old birdbath. My aunt currently has it because at the time, she was the only one that had a house. There is also a water pump at an abandoned house I want.

The sundial will be able to be used an average of 166 days a year. I don't know if that's worth it and it doesn't take into consideration partly sunny days. There's not even half a year of sunny days in Cleveland. I fear Brutus once again has wasted his money.

The second chapter of Vagabond Girl posted back on Thursday. Go check it out. I plan on posting a chapter on Mondays and Thursdays through October to see if there is any interest. If you would like to support me or this website, you can buy me a cup of coffee here.

Golden Boy

In 1903, plans were made for a railroad to be built from Topeka, Kansas to Council Grove. As it became clear that this railroad probably wouldn't get built, its lines became extended and even more plans were made in hope of securing funding.

The Topeka, Eskridge & Council Grove Railroad.

"We'll be dead soon anyway..."

I guess the island is pretty sound. It's been there long enough to have pretty large palm tree on it. And these people seem unbothered by being here on this island so maybe I shouldn't be concerned.

Golden touch my ass. Veeblefester was born into wealth. He has other people to deal with his money. That's literally the only thing I actually like about Veeblefester is that he's an old school rich person and doesn't actively use his money to make everyone's lives worse unlike just about every other rich person out there.

Requiem for a Rainy Sunday

June 26, 1988

Brutus' appendix burst and he died of sepsis so Brutus has been wandering around as a ghost since 1988. Why Brutus continues to live his life and go to work when he's a ghost is something that demands attention though.

Glad to see Gladys driving Brutus to the hospital. An ambulance isn't your own personal taxi to the hospital...wait...

We've had enough rain around here. I don't know how it's been in Ohio but I swear it's practically rained everyday here in Kansas. I'm certain everything is fine and we don't need to worry about anything.

Ha Ha Laugh

August 17, 1967

I don't know about you, but I feel Wilberforce needs to be beaten up after this game. It must be a light rain with no lightening. Although it is the 60s. Being struck by lightening probably built character or something.

How does Wilberforce not know what a laugh track is? Was he born yesterday? I mean, I agree. Laugh tracks are the Devil and unnecessary, but I don't know, maybe it's a short-term memory thing...

My friend has been having a rough summer and we just started back to work. If you can afford to give something, she and I would really appreciate it. Her Cash App is here or you can give through me in the About page.

Carpenters Reference?

August 1, 1967

Is Brutus hungover? He also looks like he's going to throw up, but that may be just hearing the word 'horoscope'.

Okay, it's rainy days and Mondays, so saying "rainy Tuesdays through Sundays" is at best redundant and at worst interpreting the song incorrectly. "Rainy days" already implies rainy Tuesdays through Sundays.

But he does seem to have the day off so that a good thing, right?

Close Enough

June 7, 1967

I hope the screen door is all right. It seems like a quality screen door. Will keep people in and out of your house.

Mr. Gretch?

This comic took quite the turn. "Be happy, Mother Gargle, it's Spring! Spring is great! Give me a Shakespearian sonnet!" That would be like me going "I hear it's your birthday! Happy birthday! Here's a passage from Dostoyevsky!"

Day of Rest...Please?

March 13, 1988
Your hedges are already covered in snow so a little bit more won't hurt. Making someone find another spot for the snow that's not anywhere around where they're shoveling seems like a lot to ask for only $10.

Brutus is really going through some stuff and his wife's reaction is to pat his belly and make a fat joke. I'm surprised Brutus doesn't have some vice to get him through life.

Coordinating Shirt and House

May 19, 1967
On the plus side, it looks like Wilberforce is gonna get knocked off the car and get a concussion from the "drive-in" sign. Unfortunately, the paramedics and having to explain why you didn't know a child was on top of your car might ruin the movie-going experience.

The sign reads "Politicians kiss babies, baby, so why can't I kiss you?".

Crocuses are low-lying flowers so I don't know if you'd be able to see them "sticking up through the snowdrift". I agree with Gladys' reaction in the last panel. I walked over here for this?!

(Not) Going Green

Courtroom sketch by Dana Verkouteren
President Trump showed up at the Supreme Court to intimidate the justices see how his Solicitor General is handling his birthright citizenship argument. Trump doesn't believe there should be birthright citizenship in the United States because he's a racist piece of shit and those people don't vote for him he thinks it only applies to children of slaves. I don't know, but the 14th Amendment is pretty clear and has been settled law since 1898. I don't think birthright citizenship will be discarded, because think of the can of worms that would open up. What I do think will happen, as has happened in nearly every other case Trump has lost, is Trump will be given a blueprint on how to eliminate birthright citizenship legally and constitutionally. Essentially he'll be told to go through Congress. The 14th Amendment can be easily (re: not easily) removed through an amendment. I mean, Trump will never get 2/3rds of Congress to approve and 34(?) states to ratify it by November or even 2028, but he can try.

It's hilarious to me that Trump controls each branch of the government and he can't advance his agenda. It shows just how unpopular his agenda is with just the people he has to work with. Since he can't push his agenda through the way he's supposed to, he's forced to go through unconstitutional, vague, and/or impotent executive orders which end up getting struck down by the courts, who usually tell Trump how to do this legally and constitutionally, which then just starts the cycle over again because Trump can't actually pass anything through Congress because he's not popular and is a lame duck president. It's hilarious, sad, and upsetting--especially during the time people are actually enforcing the executive orders or using various federal departments to hurt their own citizens.

May 18, 1967
Is this what this week in May 1967 is going to be? I'm not a fan. I love we have to clarify who did this. Brutus hasn't even been the main character for a year yet so of course we don't know who anyone is. I mean, this girl just popped up a week ago!

If Veeblefester isn't environmentally friendly by now then he's never going to be. I guess it's good that Arnie is optimistic.

Wilberforce the Last Two Days: 🤑

May 1, 1967
Did people still go to drive-in theaters when it was raining? I think you could still see the movie if it's raining hard enough. Why's the kid crying? I agree, shut him up! Is the Native American being shot at by arrows from other Native Americans?

I feel a lot of my commentary on these old comics is just me asking about life back in the 1960s because I wasn't around for them. I need to work on that.

I think Brutus and Gladys need to sit Wilberforce down and talk to him about money. He's getting a little obsessed. I don't think you need to worry about money talking, Wilberforce. You won't have enough money for it to matter.

Snow Blow

December 12, 1987
I'm sure Mrs. Preen enjoys having these men stand around her as she answers the doctors' medical questions. Can she get a little privacy?

And Brutus, you're not pregnant. You're just getting old.

Man, Kewpie's a picky pup. If my dogs don't want to go out that's fine, but sooner or later they will and it doesn't matter if it's raining, snowing, or whatever, they'll go outside.

I don't think we needed three panels explaining why Brutus is snowblowing the grass, but here we are.

Cold Spell Monday

I was alerted to another comic strip that Art Sansom did when he was a bullpen artist for Newspaper Enterprises. Peggy was one of those ubiquitous teenage comics roughly in the vein of Archie, Penny, and even Flapper Fannie and maybe even Luann. The strip lasted from around 1949 until 1951 when Sansom was put on Chris Welkin. Speaking of which, the February and March 1952 strips posted on Saturday, if you are so inclined to read.

Peggy, April 23, 1951
I will have to see if I can find a good collection of Peggy online and add them to my Art & Chip Sansom repertoire.

March 10, 1967
Women's day at the golf course. Why is that tree right there where you tee off? It's fine. She's still under par.

Uncle Ted is a fan of Peter O'Toole. A big fan.

The Throwaway Panel Adds Nothing To This

November 1, 1987
How many brain cells does Brutus lose when he walks into this restaurant? And you're just gonna let him walk out on his bill just on his word he'll mail in a check the next morning? I'd be on board with that if they knew Brutus, he was a regular, and they know he was good for it, but clearly they don't know Brutus. This restaurant deserves to lose money and shut down.

I want to acknowledge one of the more interesting things about these older strips. For some reason, I really like Art's illustration showing quick head movements. You know, the two faces on the head as seen in the second panel.
I just think it's neat.

I appreciate this almost current Sunday strip that was probably made about a month ago. Unfortunately, there's, like, 12 inches of snow that fell over the last 24 hours or so. Unless, like I've mentioned before, all Veeblefester employees live in their own community and it's a domed community, but that seems too dystopian for a legacy comic strip.

Speaking of dystopian, President Donald Trump is a rapist, pedophile, and murderer. Fuck Trump and Fuck ICE. If you would like to support the Great State of Minnesota and the people of Minneapolis, you can check out resources here.

Snow Blow

February 22, 1967
The whole problem with this ruse that now you are wandering around the city with no lodge meeting to go to and what are you going to do with your outfit when you get to wherever you are playing poker? Is Brutus the Grand Poobah of his lodge?

If only there was something that could've happened so Brutus wouldn't have to make up a lodge meeting and still go out and hang with his friends.

Dick Cavalli, who this strip gives apologies to, was the writer/artist on NEA's Morty Meekle which would become Winthrop. The strip would last from 1956 until 1994. Cavalli would pass away in 1997 at the age of 74. I am just assuming Cavalli would fake lodge meetings to get away from his wife, Helen.

I'm glad to see Wilberforce is excited for the snow. I'm more in Hattie's camp. If you're gonna snow, get me out of work.

Impressed that the sidewalks have already been cleared. Wherever they live is on it with snow removal, unlike every other place in the country.

Don't You Be Bringing Facts Into This Argument!

February 17, 1967
It's nice to know this Veeblefetzer enjoys going to work as much as I do. And that's really saying something considering Veeblefetzer is the--NOW HEAR THIS!--president of the company.

Sigh. I'd rather see Brutus slip on the ice at the bus stop.

You Push It Back a Year, I Expect a Double Bonus

February 14, 1967
Early 1967? I guess the Army Corps of Engineers haven't gotten around to building flood control in this area yet.

Kewpie looks thrilled to be trapped on the roof with the people she loves.

December 30, 2014
We've had a lot of bonus talk this year. I guess Veeblefester changed his mind about the $500, if you ignore that this comic is a rerun.

Is the bonus only for these people? That's about $71 apiece. Much better than I thought.

Bide-A-Wee Gas, tires fixed also

February 11, 1967
Did Art and Isabel (his wife we never seem to mention) honeymoon in Pacific Grove, California? Brutus and Gladys at least did. Unless Bide-A-Wee Lodge was once a chain across the country. I'm sure their stay in the upstairs room at Bide-A-Wee Gas, Apex Doob proprietor, will be just fine with chewy cheese sandwiches, poorly functional beds, and being lulled to sleep by the constant train traffic on the tracks just behind the building.

Sigh...Ok...

I hope Brutus and Gladys need a tire fixed. Apex seems really proud of his tire-fixing ability.

Hurricane Hattie Snow Removal Company

January 21, 1967
How did Floyd and Josephine get into that drawer? What were they doing in that drawer?

I feel we're going to see a lot of frogs in these early Wilberforce strips because if I recall correctly, a lot of young boys had "pet" frogs in their TV shows and stories I've read.

Nah, we good, Hurricane.

We have a decent group of kids in our neighborhood and every year I worry they will start knocking on our door to shovel sidewalks, mow, or something else and I'll have to turn them down. They haven't though. They clearly don't know about capitalism and the feeling you get when you do hard, physical labor. Good for them.

The Children Are Threatening to Riot

December 12, 1966
I think I mowed my last for this season. I last mowed a couple weeks ago then Fall arrived.

You know, that tall grass will still be there after the Spring thaw.

You're out of candy? Then turn that porch light off and ignore the trick-or-treaters. You are not obligated to keep an endless supply of candy around.

For our last Halloween post is "Emily In the Cellar" from Liberty Horror #6 (2022). Emily has spent the last five years locked in an abandoned cellar. Why is she down there and will she be able to leave?
