Food-Themed Friday

I've been going through some stuff over the last few weeks. Due to that stuff and the stress it has caused, I haven't been able to write very much. Even the editing on my book has diminished. Besides work, personal stuff, and writing, I am also burned out on social media. Given this, I know when I'm beat. I'll be taking the next week or so off to finish editing Vagabond Girl and get other stories planned. I will also be offline for much of the next week to recharge my brain. I'm hoping to come back refreshed and ready for more The Born Loser and history-focused Instagram posts.

If you would like to support my writing, research, or website, you can buy me a cup of coffee over on Ko-fi.

Sgt. Snorkel after the war.

Or not. Is it just me or does it seem like this diner is more competent than the diner that's shown in modern strips? I guess it was just a different time...

The waiter doesn't need to hear your entire life story, Brutus. Just order the lobster. Veeblefester doesn't seem like a business that would pay for meals for just their employees so go easy on the splurging. It may be your last.

Potato Collecting?

I don't have anything special for you this week. I have a few in the works for the upcoming weeks but nothing today. Just a bunch of comics to comment on. That's what you come here for, right?

Shoe
"On the plus side, they're still nude, they're just in more religious-y and God forgiving poses. Somehow that's sexier."

Big Nate

Beetle Bailey
Who knew that Sgt. Snorkel could get so offended by a belch. He really loves Otto.

And Snorkel and Otto working side-by-side is freakin' adorable.

Marvin
We can guess what Bitsy was going to do. We didn't need the red words reading "Tinkle, tinkle, tinkle" to hammer home the joke.

The Born Loser
"You opened the door, Gladys. Don't be upset at what could fly out."

I know I've complained about co-workers but aside from using my job for hilarious anecdotes and commentary on our crumbling society, the last thing I want to do when I get home is talk more about work.

His Spine Will Never Be the Same

Welp, Brutus is dead.

Don't go help him up or anything just let him lie there a crumpled mess like Beetle Bailey...
...It's fine. Just continue to sit there, eat your cereal, and laugh.

From Living to Dead

As many of you have probably found out, Mort Walker, creator of the hit comic strips Beetle Bailey and Hi and Lois passed away yesterday at the age of 94. Walker was one of the last great cartoonists still living and his contributions to the comics page will last forever.

Luckily It Was the Chicken's Blood, Sweat, and Tears

Beetle Bailey
The way this country treats our military sometimes is just blasphemous.

Family Circus
If you want to inject Jeffy with a lethal dose of potassium chloride and say it's a flu shot or something, no one would rat you out.

Crankshaft
You ungrateful son of a... You and the teacher make a mistake causing yourselves to have to be marooned at the theater and you crap all over it. It's a wonder no one has killed you.

panel from Funky Winkerbean
Speaking of wondering why somehow hasn't killed someone yet, here's Funky and his wife. She's not going to kill him because of the bad joke or the insult to her but because she's not seeking heat so the joke/insult doesn't work.

Hi and Lois, January 29-30, February 2-3

It's clear that the five random people who create Hi and Lois don't talk to each other or even half-assedly concern themselves with even the most basic continuity, right?

Popeye
Wait. Does everybody think this gorilla in a suit is a human being? It's like that episode of The Flintstones where everybody thinks a gorilla is Fred just because the gorilla is wearing the same shirt.

There Are Many Fine Women In Antarctica

Beetle Bailey
"Apparently when you run over more than three people, they deem you 'a danger to the state.'"

Mary Worth
Give Wilbur a little credit. It's possible that he's found a lovely female penguin down in Antarctica. Maybe you'll soon be getting a postcard saying that he's taking care of him and his girlfriend's egg.

Rex Morgan, M.D.
Wow! Trump's only been president for 24 hours and the Morgans are already winning! Wait...this has always happened, the Morgans falling ass backwards into money. But soon we will all fall ass backwards into money. Soon.

Unappreciated Thursday

Funky Winkerbean
"Fantastic! I'm in! I'm all for being reminded about how my wife died of cancer and left a gaping black hole in my heart and life. Great idea!!"

Rex Morgan, M.D.
"What? No. I am a fantastically acclaimed doctor. June just misses working because she doesn't like being a mom. To Sarah anyway."

Beetle Bailey
Before school started, our district got rid of daily planners but my school wanted to keep something that the kids could keep track of their assignments on and have hall passes on them. We decided to make our own. That meant that before school started, the paras, which includes me, had to three-hole punch them and bind them. The planners were just paper so they were easily ripped apart. We binded roughly 600 planners--probably more--and the kids just destroy them so I know exactly how Beetle feels.

Love the Choker, Dawn

Beetle Bailey
While I don't understand how Lt. Fuzz ended up on the other side of Sarge in panel two, I am loving the angry look on his face.

Dennis the Menace
Menacing Tip #42: Make sure to remind adults above thirty that they are closer to the end of their life while you are still closer to the beginning of yours. It will make them question the choices that they have made and think about where it all went wrong.

Hi and Lois
"I mean, these things can easily be recycled. So just remind him that the city offers a recycling program. Oh, and keep him away from loaded firearms."

Mary Worth
Yes!! They are on a collision course to wackiness!! Can everybody say "Swingers"?

Christmas 2016

I've always been a huge fan of Charles Dickens' A Christmas Carol. It's part of the reason that I try to be a decent human being. The thought of possibly being shackled with heavy chains in the afterlife does not thrill me, I don't care if I am a ghost. My favorite versions are the Mister Magoo version and this one. It's only 25 minutes and it won an Oscar. Enjoy and then head down to the comics.

Funky Winkerbean
"Well, my friend and costar didn't kill herself so let's go to Coronado Island. We need to get away from the stress of Los Angeles."

Slylock Fox and Comics For Kids
I guess you could put a tarp over the artifacts or maybe you should've driven something that was a bit more enclosed. Or just bury everything, I guess that works too.

Rex Morgan, M.D.
I would've rather seen Rex read 'Twas the Night Before Christmas to Sarah but her coming out of her coma is good too, I guess.

Blasphemous Saturday

The Amazing Spider-Man
"We've been together for years and you still don't know how my spider-sense works? I'm kind of glad I made that deal with Mephisto in the other universe."

Barney Google and Snuffy Smith
I thought this was going to be a lecture about how being is promiscuous is wrong and all that garbage and while it starts out that way, Loweezy seems perfectly fine with Lureen's choice. I am too. It's your body, ladies, do what you want with it.

Beetle Bailey
As an even bigger slap to the face, Sarge is praying to the almighty pizza god right there in front of the chaplain.
