J.K. Bartleson

Joseph Kathcart Bartleson was born 1827 in Sterling, Pennsylvania. While in Pennsylvania, he was a member of the Wallen Paupack Lodge in Newfoundland, Pennsylvania. When Bartleson arrived in Tecumseh, Kansas in 1855, he was one of the first five founding members of the first Odd Fellows Lodge in Kansas: Shawnee Lodge No. 1. Being a carptenter, Bartleson made a pedestal and table for the Lodge, which would move to Topeka in 1861. Sadly, the pedestal, table, and Lodge itself would burn down in 1869. Bartleson was one of the few anti-slavery settlers in the Tecumseh area. To protest slavery and certain members of the Lodge, in 1859, several anti-slavery members resigned or let their memberships lapse. Bartleson wouldn't rejoin the Lodge until 1905.

Bartleson was also a farmer who owned Cedar Grove, one of the nicest farms in the township and one of the best producers of fruit in the state. Bartleson grew apples, peaches, cherries, and strawberries among various vegetables. His farm was located at present day 37th and Tecumseh.

Joseph and his wife, Sarah, had six children. The oldest was William (1860-1944), who took over the farm when Joseph and Sarah moved to Topeka for medical reasons. Mary (1861-1949) married Frank Melton. John (1864-1936) moved to Topeka and married Rosella Polson who passed away in 1908. He remarried to Clara Barker in 1913. Susan died July 18, 1868 after living only one day. Sylvia (1874-1885) was a child of remarkable intelligence whose love of books and music were cultivating her into a noble young woman. She died after a brief illness at the age of 11. Joseph Henry (1877-1944) married Emily Yardley in 1908 and together they moved to Kirkland, Washington. Sadly, Emily died of the Spanish Flu in 1918. Henry would remarry to Grace Roland in 1921.

Joseph died of "diabetes and old age" on May 1, 1910. His obituary says that he had been blind for five years after being hit by a piece of wood. It also mentions he was one of the fighters at the Battle of Byram's Ford (Battle of the Blue) in Kansas City, Missouri.

Sarah Eliza Toole was born in Kentucky in 1831. They married in 1859. She would outlive her husband by 13 years passing away in 1923. The Bartleson family is buried in Bethel Cemetery south of Tecumseh with the exception of John, who is buried in Topeka Cemetery, and Henry, who is buried in Bremerton, Washington.

Sylvia Bartleson
January 26, 1874 - September 6, 1885

from the Topeka Daily Mail, October 16, 1885
I cannot help my thought going today to the home which has so lately been bereft of Joy's sunlight--so hushed and silent. I am thinking of her moaning in pain; of the crushed, almost heartbroken mother; of another whose heart is aching over the loss of his dear companionable little daughter--for there was always a strong bond of sympathy between the two--and I know he is longing with an uncontrollable desire for another glimpse of her sweet, flower-like face--listening, unconsciously, for the music of her glad young voice, for her light touch on the organ, and the sound of her flying feet on the stairs. How sad when she called the family to her dying couch, one by one to bid them all a last farewell; but she feared not death as all was peaceful and calm, she requested friends who stood around to pray and sing. How comforting to think she has gone to rest. Although our dead go away never to return shall we not again after we have "passed thro' the valley, the dark death valley, Meet them on the other shore?"

Gone from the household, its joy and its light,
Vanished forever its vision so bright;
The flesh glowing cheek and the radiant eye,
Faded and dimmed, 'neath the green sward lie.

Suddenly down the death angel came,
His young, blooming, innocent victim to claim;
Brief was the warning, remorseless, he gave--
Nought her dear life from his power could save.

Gone from the struggles and trials before her,
Gone from temptations and cares hanging o'er her;
Saved from the world's cold and pitiless strife,
Saved from the many misfortunes of life.

Over her fair form the flowers shall bloom,
And birds warble sweetly their, banishing gloom;
Soft summer breezes will sigh through the dell--
Dirges from heaven for our lost Sylvia.

What's Mother Gargle Doing With Her Hand?

One indigenous island person discusses something with another that's wearing a chef's hat. The chef walks back to his giant cauldron where who he is cooking for dinner is roasting hot dogs over the fire underneath the cauldron.
January 18, 1966
Is he cooking another tribal member? Someone from another tribe? It's really cool this indigenous tribe has modern amenities like hot dogs and chef's hats.

Gladys is way too excited in that first panel. I get that fruitcake is a food and Gladys loves food, but still, tone it down.

Strike Two

Brutus is standing behind Gladys as she sits in a chair reading a book. Brutus is wearing a party hat and carrying a horn. "I give up, Gladys. Where is it?" "Where is what?" "My birthday cake." "Birthday cake?" "Come on," Brutus is now standing in front of Gladys. "I know you haven't forgotten. You surprise me with a party every year! It's almost midnight, so you'd better hurry! You know how crazy I am about surprises..heh, heh!" "I know..." Gladys begins "That's why this year I decided to surprise you. *Yawn* G'Night." Gladys gets up and walks away. Brutus slumps down into the chair.
July 20, 1986
We were talking about Brutus' birthday last week. You mean to tell me that there's continuity in these Sunday strips?

Brutus has been wearing that party hat for at least six hours. He's really committed to this surprise party and showing that he knows there's going to be a party.

Brutus pops his head into Veeblefester's office. "Good morning, Chief!" "You're late, Thornapple! We were scheduled to start doing inventory an hour ago." "I'm sorry, chief. I got up late." "You should've gotten up earlier." "Gee, chief, I would have but by the time I woke up, it was already too late for me to get up any earlier!" Brutus leaves and Veeblefester turns to the reader. "I fear I've been around him too long. He's beginning to make sense to me."
Hmm. Brutus is making this a habit which is something I warned about back in November. I feel Brutus should now be getting some sort of verbal warning. "We need to talk about your performance and our expectations..."

Saturday Sleeps

A dirty, unshaven hippie man is painting on a fence. He is painting THE WORLD IS COMING TO AN E with the last word, end, cut off because he ran out of fence.
January 15, 1966
It's because of this why Ted Kaczynski moved to sending explosives through the mail.

People have been predicting and "ushering in" the end of the world for centuries now and all I can say is when is it actually going to happen? I've had my bags packed for years.

Gladys is shouting up the stairs. "Wilberforce, rise and shine!" "Aw, gee!" he whines. "I know it's cold and dark out but you don't want to sleep the day away." Wilberforce, upstairs in bed in his Sleep Sack, says "I'm not sleeping. I'm hibernating!"
It is Saturday. Lemme sleep! My cat sure didn't.

Friday Veeblefe$ter

A man in a suit and top hat stands on the platform at the depot of North Grunion as a train approaches. A car screeches to a halt and a woman in a robe and curlers runs up to the man. "You forgot your watercress sandwiches. Pop them in your attaché case and you can go about projecting your image."
January 15, 1966
Your guess is as good as mine, folks! I guess this guy isn't really all that he makes himself out to be (watercress sandwiches? Wotta loser!) but that's meeting this strip more than halfway.

Veeblefester is sitting at his desk, a bag of money sitting on the edge, as Brutus stands there. "I am thinking about changing the spelling of my surname, Veeblefester." "You mean to shorten it to something like Veeble?" "No, to change the S in Veeblefester to a dollar sign."
I don't think you can put symbols in your name. And I wouldn't be spending any time on your surname when your given name is Rancid.

Thursday Echo

Two hunters are being danced around by two giant moose. Their guns lay on the ground outside of their reach. One hunter angrily says "You'll never bag a moose without a mating horn, you said!"
January 14, 1966
Well, these guys are going to undergo some trauma. Don't get me wrong, I feel like these cartoon moose with their little mating dance would be kind and generous lovers, but real moose would probably just entice you, mount you, trample or crush you, and still try to shove it in.

Brutus is standing dangerously close to the edge of Echo Point. Brutus shouts into the void "Hello!" and the echo responds with "Hello!" Brutus then shouts "Brutus Thornapple is the greatest!" which the echo does not repeat, much to Brutus' consternation.
Maybe a moose will mate Brutus right off the edge of Echo Point. Which would definitely make the news because Ohio does not have moose.

Wednesday...Uh, Something

Two men are in a submarine, both are wearing white hats so are they both captains? Anyway, they are looking at a map and one of the men says "I pinpoint our position at the mouth of the Bering Sea. Shall we up-periscope and have a peek?" The periscope goes up, coming out of a manhole in the city as several people and a couple cars watch.
January 13, 1966
That is a very long periscope. I'm also worried that if the rest of this submarine is anything like it's navigation system, then it's about to implode, crushing the occupants like those morons who tried to visit the Titanic.

Brutus is visiting Rapid Ruth's Dry Cleaners. Brutus is angry. "What do you mean my suit won't be ready until Friday? When I dropped it off yesterday, you said it'd be done in 24 hours!" "That right," Rapid Ruth says. "I only work eight hours a day, you know."
It looks like Ruth is just by herself (kudos for Brutus for patronizing a small business) so 24 hours seems like a stretch. Even going to a dry cleaner chain getting 24 hours is difficult. I think you usually have to pay extra for that. I don't know. I don't dry clean anything anymore.

Ruth also looks very tired, so maybe calm your butt, Brutus.

Tuesday Trash

An unkempt, unshaven man lays on a couch with a beer next to him. His wife, just as unkempt as him, holds a mop and is yelling at him. "And as your wife, just what DO I represent to you Melvin Julius Undershot? A passing fancy? A status symbol?"
January 12, 1966
I don't even know what to say here. You're both terrible.

Gladys and Brutus are standing in the kitchen. Brutus is holding a cup of coffee while Gladys is holding a Post-It note. "Didn't you see this reminder note to take out the trash that I put on the back door?" Gladys asks. "No, you should've put it somewhere I would've seen it," Brutus says. We get a close-up of Brutus' face with a Post-It note reading 'TRASH' on his forehead.
Why couldn't you do that? Does Brutus have to do everything around here?

Monday Quickies

January 11, 1966
You should be lucky he just took a pair of scissors to your tie, Lance P. Kettledrum, President❕

Is Willoughby trying to tell him something? It could be one or all of a number of things. It also looks like he's walking about not wearing any pants.

It also could cause a torn perinium but we're not gonna talk about that.

Seriously, Why So Angry?

I had to think about it, but I have never been denied anything from my health insurance. I think my wife has been, but it was reinstated because of the doctor or on appeal or something, I can't remember. However, it suddenly came to me that a healthcare denial has personally affected me.

My mom was in the hospital for almost a month. Because she had Aetna, every couple weeks she had to be testing to see if she was getting better. Honestly, depending on the day, it did seem like she was getting better, slowly but surely. Anyway, it came to a point where she had to be at a certain point or they would stop paying for her hospital stay and require she be moved to a nursing facility.

I don't understand or know what their criteria is/was. I asked but even the professionals couldn't really tell me. Anyway, an extension of her stay was denied so she was then transported to a nursing facility. In the meantime, because her insurance would basically no longer pay for care/rehab and I certainly can't afford it, we began proceeding to basically begin palliative care. She went to the facility where she died two days later.

Anyway, I don't know if former Aetna CEO Brian Kane, who left Aetna in August, had anything to do with it. But maybe all these insurers realizing how much they are hated and having at least one person do something about it will make current Aetna CEO Steve Nelson be better.

But probably not.

Glady is on the phone, trying to be secretive. "Hello? I, uh...I can't talk now..." Brutus peers around the corner. "I told you only to call when my husband is at work," Gladys continues. Brutus is stunned. "Listen, Frederick, he goes to work at eight in the morning," Gladys says. "Frederick!" Brutus thinks. "Alright, I'll look for you about ten..." "Aha! GLadys, the jig is up!" Brutus leaps out from around the corner. "Mercy. Caught in the act...of buying you a new lounge chair for your birthday. Care to talk to the salesman?" GLadys hands Brutus the phone but Brutus has shrunk from embarrassment. Seriously, he only comes up to Gladys' knees.
July 13, 1986
Part of this is on Gladys. Why did she use these words? She also didn't have to spill the beans on the chair. Is today Brutus' birthday? Maybe. It'd be one of seven, I think is what we are up to now.

Brutus is in a fancy restaurant. The waiter is waiting on him. "Are you ready to hear tonight's offerings, sir?" "I already know what I want. I'm on an expense account for a business trip, so I'm going to splurge and have surf and turf with a glass of an appropriate wine." "Excellent! I'm sure you will find our filet mignon and lobster tail superb. As for our featured wines by the glass, today we have a chardonnay for a white and a cabernet for red." "Gee, I know red wine should be paired with beef and white with seafood, but I'm having beef and seafood! I'm so confused. I can't decide whether I should go with the red or the white." "Why don't I just bring you one of each and you can mix them together?"
Chip got me. I have been complaining since forever about Brutus eating out at fancy restaurants without his family and for no good reason. Well, we finally have a reason. Whenever he's in a fancy restaurant without his family, he's on a business trip. Chip won this round.

What I don't understand now is why this waiter got so angry so quickly. Brutus got the wine pairings right so it's not like he's being gauche. Don't be a dick, just offer a suggestion, dude.
