Valorous Brown was born in Butler, Ohio to Matthew and Aurelia (Buell) Brown. He married Olive Willey on December 15, 1844 and they had nine children: Ellen Louisa, Isaac Bitler, Maryette, Matthew, Richard Fletcher, Valorous Fremont, Wade, Aurelia, and Olive Bell. The couple came to Kansas in March of 1870 and settled in the Thompsonville area. Olive died after a short illness in 1887.

Valorous remarried to Miriam A. Blackman and had two more children: Miriam Alta and Ruth. Valorous died in 1899. Miriam would pass in 1912.
